WSHS Varsity vs. TC Williams

A Close Game Against the Titans

The Spartans lost another close game this weekend. The game against TC Williams resulted in a 21–17 loss for the Spartans. The game was played on a Saturday afternoon, instead of the regular Friday night, and featured two strong defenses that ended up scoring many of the game’s points.

The Spartans were without starting quarterback Peter Muskett, but were left in the capable hands of backup Jake Herzog, who was returning from an injury of his own. Herzog and the Spartan offense were able to move the ball down the field, but had trouble finding the endzone on many of their drives.

The Spartans struck first on a defensive touchdown. A nice fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by linebacker Mike Giordano put the Spartans up 0–6 after a failed two-point conversion. A field goal later in the second quarter gave the Spartans a 0–9 lead over the Titans, but it didn’t last too long. The Titans scored on a fourth down play to close the scoring gap by 7 points. A lost fumble by the Spartans would later lead to a Titans touchdown that would give them a 14–9 lead that they would take into halftime.

The Titans received the kickoff after halftime, but were stopped by the Spartan’s defense. But on the next drive, the Titans were able to recover a defensive fumble and return it all the way to the endzone for a touchdown to increase their lead to 21–9.

The Spartans entered the fourth quarter with a 12-point deficit, but were able to score early in the fourth. The Spartan’s defense forced fumbles on 2 consecutive drives, and the offense was able to score a touchdown off of the second. After a successful two-point conversion, the score was 21–17. The Spartans got the ball back with 6:25 left in the game, but turned the ball over in less than 3 minutes. The Spartan’s defense once again forced a fourth down on the Titans, but the Titan’s offense went for the first down. A successful quarterback sneak gave the Titans that first down, and sealed their victory.

The Spartans started to come back against the Titans, but their efforts came up just short and ended in a 4-point loss.
