WSHS Varsity vs. Annandale

Game Summary

The WS Spartans had a tough season this year marred by injuries and losses, but that all come to a good close on Friday when they beat Annandale 21–7. They were out of playoff contention at that point, but Annandale wasn’t. Had they won, Annandale would’ve secured a place in the playoffs, plus it was their own senior night at home.

WS made an early statement in the first quarter when the offense drove down the field, and capitalized on it with quarterback Peter Muskett darting a nice pass to receiver Jake Herzog. Now that the Annandale offense was driving down the field, it looked like it would be an old-fashioned shootout. However, the defense came up big with huge plays during the drive to slow down momentum. First, there was big sack by defensive end James Djonkam. After that, the defense locked it down with an interception by defensive back Jake Herzog.

The Spartans came back onto the field looking to take advantage of what the defense had done for them. Nearly forced to punt, they kept the drive alive after a great snag for a huge gain by wide receiver Talon Riesbeck. They finished it off with a TD run by none other than Peter Muskett. The Spartans were up 14–0.

A few drives later, the WS defense came up yet again after providing a necessary goal line stop against their offense. The statement was quite clear that they were not able to run the ball against the Spartans, and that for the first time for the whole season, that the defense was looking for a shut-out.

Before the half ended, the offense wanted to put the game away and have a comfortable lead. They did so with yet another touchdown to slot receiver Jake Herzog. With the score at 21–0, Annandale was losing hope.

Late in the third quarter, it seemed that Annandale had some life still left in them and were finally able to put up some points, but it wasn’t enough of what they needed. The final score was a 21–7 Spartan victory.
